Geochemic is made up of a small team of enthusiastic, seasoned staff with extensive experience in rocks and things.

Andrew Barnes
Managing Director
Andrew is an environmental geochemist specialising in mining waste characterisation, Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) prediction, mine water hydrogeochemistry, geochemical modelling and mining waste static and kinetic testing with a focus on novel laboratory testing techniques to assist with the development of the modern mine site. He has eight years of post doctoral experience in mining consultancy, is a chartered geologist with the Geological Society of London, and is registered with the Federation of European Geologists.
Previous to starting Geochemic, Andrew worked for an international mining consultant on numerous mine development, environmental impact assessment and closure planning projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas and gained experience with a wide range of mining commodity waste streams. Andrew has presented at several academic and industry focused conferences and has published multiple articles.

Elizabeth Howard
Resources Director
Elizabeth is a qualified accountant and has 25 years of finance experience, initially working at an IT consultancy company based in Cardiff. She is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Before joining Geochemic, Elizabeth was Finance Director at Melin Homes, a social housing provider based in South-east Wales, where she worked for 20 years. She is also currently a board member at Cynon Taf Community Housing Group.
Her role in Geochemic includes responsibility for finance, HR, marketing and health & safety.

Jess Butland
Laboratory Operations Manager
Jess joined Geochemic in 2024 as a Laboratory Technician and progressed through senior roles to her current position as Laboratory Operations Manager. In this role, she oversees daily operations, personnel, safety, and resource management.
Before joining Geochemic, Jess previously served as a Research Environment Officer at the University of South Wales and a Pathology Scientist in a medical testing laboratory. She holds a BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography from the University of Southampton.

Jess Cole
Technical Coordinator
Before University Jess tried her hand at a few different fields including retail, horticultureand work in medical laboratory until deciding to study a BSc in Chemistry then a MSc in Applied Environmental Geology at Cardiff University.
Before joining Geochemic, Jess was an Environmental Technician remediating domestic and commercial oil spills, she then decided to join Geochemic as she wanted to work in a laboratory setting and the work we do here is directly related to her studies. She started at Geochemic as a Laboratory Technician and is now a Technical Coordinator.

Shona Martin
Project Coordinator
Shona retired from full time work in 2023 following a career managing people and services, in the Civil Service, local government and housing.
She joined Geochemic in 2023 working part-time, her role involves drafting quotes for testing, monitoring progress of contracted testing, and sending invoices. She also drafts and reviews policy documents, risk assessments and assists with general office administration.
